Ali Shariati was a little known Sociologist in Iran for most of his life. Yet his ideas inspired many Iranians to protest in the streets of Iran culminating in the 1979 Islamic Revolution. "Red Sh'ism and Revolution" goes into his work and how he fundamentally reinterpreted Shi'ite Islam. Much of the work completed on the Iranian revolution focuses on various aspects such as the state of the Iranian economy, political freedoms in Iran, or the protests that took place. Very little work actually goes into the theological basis of the revolution. My thesis focuses on Shariati's views of property, martyrdom, Ashura, and revolutionary religion. This answers a key question of why the Islamic Revolution happened.
