SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
The themes of entrepreneurship and agribusinesses have continued to echo with a wide range of initiatives around the country. Although, the attention and recognition accorded to the concept of entrepreneurial initiatives is derived from the fact that it is closely related to competitiveness and innovation. Additionally, the economic instability, resource limitations and environmental uncertainties call for entrepreneurial initiatives as the option for agribusinesses to attain synergy, maximise profits, achieve eco-friendly practices and increasingly compete in the global market. The study therefore examined the relationship between entrepreneurial initiatives and performances of agribusiness clusters in the North Central zone of Nigeria. Specifically, the examined the relationship between entrepreneurial initiatives and profit maximisation among agribusiness clusters; determined the effect of entrepreneurial initiatives on employment generation among agribusiness clusters; examined the relationships between entrepreneurial initiatives and innovative capacity among agribusinesses clusters; and evaluated the effect of entrepreneurial initiatives on agribusiness competitiveness among clusters in North central Nigeria. The study adopted cross sectional survey and phenomenological research approach. Agribusiness clusters in North Central Zone of Nigeria was used as the study area with sample of 342 respondents were selected using adopted multistage and expert sampling techniques for the questionnaire and focus group discussion respectively. The questionnaire and focus group discussions data were analyzed using Smart PLS-Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) technique and thematic analysis. The results revealed that entrepreneurial initiatives have significant positive effect on agribusiness cluster performance. From the study, it was established that networking initiative (T statistics =5. 628), technological adoption (T statistics = 4.478), and entrepreneurial orientation (T statistics =5.912) were essential elements in ensuring profit maximization, employment generation, innovative capacity and agribusiness competitiveness among agribusiness clusters. This was corroborated by the thematic analysis of the FGD which revealed other components of entrepreneurial initiatives such as de-risking initiatives, internalisation of agribusinesses, entrepreneurial education and establishment of common facility centers. The study thus concluded that entrepreneurial initiative is significantly related performance of agribusiness performance. The technological advancement through research and development and conscious collaboration with relevant institutions should be encouraged. There is a need for sensitisation of investors to see agriculture as a business that arose out of the willingness to take risk. In addition, cluster excellence is depicted by cluster growth, productivity and innovativeness resulting from certain entrepreneurial initiatives. Also, to increase agribusiness competitiveness in Nigeria, eco-friendly practices and entrepreneurial education should be practiced.
