SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
The study of the later history of the English Levant Companyhas been based upon the archives of the Company, preserved at thePublic Record Office. Considering the semi-public character ofthe organisation and the intimate connections with theembassy and the consular service. it was not surprising to findthat the records of the Company contained a good deal ofmaterial pertaining as much to the political as to the commercialrelations of England with the Levant. Even in an economicsurvey, this matter could not be overlooked, Chapters/Seven andTen, therefore, deal with material Covering a wider scope thanmerely the history of the Levant Company. They do not pretendto consider in detail either the policy of Napoleon, in theNear East. nor the diplomatic relations of Great Britain andthe Porte. In the former case it seemed necessary to describethe political happenings. of which the reaction precipated theopening of the Levant trade, In the latter case, it wasnecessary to explain the histoy of the Political cause of thedissolution of the Levant Company
