This paper analyzes poverty in Sudan in 1967-68 and 1978-80 in rural and urban areas and in Khartoum and in the nation as a whole. It uses a modified version of the Foster, Greer and Thorbecke (FGT) model to estimate the number of poor people and the severity of their poverty. It estimates that while the level of poverty increased, its severity decreased in 1978-80 compared to 1967-68. A review of available evidence shows that the level of poverty and it's severity must have increased considerably in the 1980s.
