The paper examines the relevant literature to see how the Marxian concept of 'class consciousness' has been understood and applied by authors in the field of Indian labour history and how this understanding has often structured the organisation of the narrative in their works. The paper locates certain problems in the usage of this concept and attempts to develop a critique of certain trends in Indian labour history.
