Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn ʿUmar b. al-Ḥusayn al-Makkī , also known as al-Rāzī, was a prominent Ashʿarī theologian and Shāfiʿī jurist, whose main claim to fame is that he was the father and first teacher of Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (544-606/1150-1210), one of the most important theologians and philosophers of classical Islam. His family moved from Mecca, apparently first to Ṭabaristān (the region of the southern shore of the Caspian Sea), and from there to the nearby city of Rayy (near present-day Tehran). Very
