Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbdallāh Ibn al-Bannāʾ (396-471/1005-79) was a prominent Ḥanbalī jurist, theologian, and historian from Baghdad, where he appears to have spent his whole life. Like his traditionalist peers who championed the role of transmitted knowledge over rational knowledge in religious matters, Ibn al-Bannāʾ studied extensively the Qurʾān, ḥadīth , law, theology, and preaching. Although it is not stated explicitly in the biographical sources, he probably also studied grammar, belles-lettres, and history. His most important teacher was undoubtedly the qāḍī
