Muhammad Hamidullah (Muḥammad Ḥamīdallāh, 1908-2002) was born on 19 February 1908 into a family of Sunnī scholars in the princely state of Hyderabad. Hamidullah's family is known as Ahl Nawāʾit (the people from Nawāʾit), a Muslim group on the Indian Subcontinent who claim descent from members of the Banū Hāshim who migrated from Mecca to the Indian Subcontinent in about the second/eighth century. Hamidullah's great-grandfather, Maulvi Mohammed Ghawth Sharful-Mulk (d. 1822), was a well-known scholar of Islamic sciences, and his maternal grandfather, Maulvi
