Artificial insemination (al-talqīḥ al-ṣināʿī) is a medical procedure for the fertilisation of an ovum by artificial means. It is employed when fertilisation through vaginal sexual intercourse has failed. Two methods of artificial insemination exist: internal and external. With the first, the husband's sperm is injected directly into his wife's vagina so that it reaches the ovum and natural fertilisation occurs. With the external method, known as IVF (in vitro fertilisation), the husband's sperm fertilises the wife's ovum outside her womb, usually in a test
