Almamy ʿAbd al-Qādir (d. 1807) ruled from 1191/1777-8 until his death as the first leader (Pulaar almamy , from Ar. al-imām ) of the Islamic state of Futa Toro. Futa (Fr. Fouta) was the Pulaar (Fulfulde) name for the middle valley of the Senegal River, the north bank of which is today in Mauritania and the south in Senegal. ʿAbd al-Qādir came from an important lineage of Kan (d. c. 1191-92/1776-77) who had been associated with earlier Islamic reform movements, in particular the one
