Yūsuf al-Badīʿī al-Dimashqī (d. 1073/1662-3), a man of letters and author of books on poets and poetry, apparently came from a humble background; not even the name of his father is known, nor is his birth date. His biographer, al-Muḥibbī (d. 1111/1699), mentions that he left Damascus in early youth and settled in Aleppo, where he became known as a man of letters. His nisba refers, it seems, to his knowledge of badīʿ (figures of speech and literary stylistics in general); his al-Ḥadāʾiq
