Naṣr Ḥāmid Abū Zayd (1943-2010) was an Egyptian specialist in Qurʾānic hermeneutics who was accused of apostasy, fled Egypt, and spent the rest of career in Europe. He was born of humble origins in Quḥāfa, a village in the delta, and was at first trained in the radio department of the Egyptian ministry of transport. In 1981, he was awarded a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from Cairo University. After teaching Arabic at Osaka University, in Japan (1985-9), he returned to Egypt and was named associate professor in
