Abdurrauf Singkili (c. 1615-93), one of the greatest Islamic scholars to emerge from the Malay world, was born in the Sumatran town of Singkel, then a vassal state of the sultanate of Aceh. His childhood years coincided with the peak of Aceh's imperial greatness and its pre-eminent role as a religious centre in the Malay world. Virtually nothing is known of his childhood, though some information can be deduced from the context in which he lived. Sultan Iskandar Muda (r. 1607-36), arguably Aceh's greatest ruler,
