Abdurrauf Singkili (c. 1615-93), one of the greatest Islamic scholars to emerge from the Malay world, was born in the Sumatran town of Singkel, then a vassal state of the sultanate of Aceh. His childhood years coincided with the peak of Aceh's imperial greatness and its pre-eminent role as a religious centre in the Malay world.
