The primary purpose of this dissertation is to understand the functions of religious cognitions to address the major life stressors and to incorporate them into counseling settings. This dissertation examines Islamic spiritual and cognitive perspectives in perceiving and coping with major life stressors, with a focus on the writings of the early twentieth-century theologian Bediuzzaman Said Nursi (1877-1960) of Turkey.
