SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
The inaccessibility of finance by SMEs has been a major hindrance (amongst other challenges) to the sector in contributing meaningfully to the growth of the Nigerian economy. Unwillingness of the deposit money banks to grant the much needed credit to the sector, likewise the attitude or the perception of the SME owners/managers about the deposit money banks credit facility has partly been responsible for this. This study examines deposit money banks credit administration on the performance of SMEs in Kwara State, Nigeria. The Specific objectives were to examined the effect of access to deposit money bank's credit on the performance of SMEs in Kwara State; evaluate the perception of respondents on credit size of deposit money bank on SMEs performance in Kwara State; examine the effect of deposit money bank's credit delivery system on SMEs performance in Kwara State and evaluate the impact of variation in interest rate/other cost on the performance of SMEs in Kwara State. The study employed survey research design. Data were drawn from the primary source to elicit responses from SME owners/managers. Using Taro Yamane (1967) sample size formula, 215 were selected from the population size of 382 SME owners/managers. Descriptive statistics, Cronbach Alpha and Partial least square - Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) estimation techniques were employed to analyse the data collected. Findings of the study revealed that there is a relationship between deposit money banks credit and SME performance. Showing that access to credit has a positive significant effect on SME performance (T=6.632, β=0.386) at 5% level of significance implying that provision of finance by deposit money banks play an important role in boosting the performance of SMEs in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study also revealed that the perception of respondents on bank credit size (T=0.391, β=0.027); credit delivery system (T=2.315, β=0.164) and variation in interest rate/other fees (T=4.830, β=0.366) all have a positive significant effect on the SMEs performance. Sequel to these findings, the study therefore concluded that SMEs in Kwara State are faced with the problem of access to finance as they are not fully benefiting from the credit facilities of the deposit money banks in particular and the financial system as a whole. The study hence recommended that SMEs should explore all avenue provided by the deposit money banks and the financial institutions in order to improve their access to finance. Also the deposit money banks should put in place, a conducive credit administration system for SMEs to enable them access fund easily. And incentives such as guarantees and interest rate subsidies should be provided by Government to encourage deposit money banks to lend to SMEs in order to boost their performance and the economy at large.
