Eleven-year-old Michelle Braddon lives on an island off the coast of Queensland, with her parents. She does school with Distance Education and spends as much time as she can observing the turtles that live near the islands shores. She calls herself Chelonia Green, after the Latin name for the green turtles. When Chelonia finds her favourite loggerhead turtle dead on the beach, strangled by discarded fishing line, she begins a crusade to clean up the rubbish on the island's beaches. She writes emails to the fishermen and yacht clubs on the mainland begging them to stop using the precious ocean as a rubbish dump. Just as Chellie is getting disheartened by her enormous task, help arrives and Chellie is recognised as a true Champion of Turtles. Suggested level: primary, intermediate.
