Fred Sedgwick's new book discusses the literacy of children in the infant years. The first part is concerned with talk, the second with writing and the third with reading. He takes the view that the child is an active learner when he or she arrives in school and that it is the school's job to build on what the child already knows. Looking at many practical examples of writing, the book examines how a child progresses over a school year.
