Marital practices are considered by many people as being cultural. However, to a practicing Muslim, it is largely religious because marriage itself is considered in Islam as an act of ^cIbadah which attracts both rewards and punishment depending on a Muslim's attitude to it. Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State is predominantly Muslim populated. It is, however, observed that many, despite professing Islam, are still being largely influenced by certain cultural marital practices. It is against this backdrop that this study examines the marital practices of Muslims in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State with a view to determining the extent of their compliance or otherwise to the teachings of Islam as contained in the Qur'an and Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW). The research adopted descriptive, analytical and exegetical methodology. The research tools used were un-structured interviews and consultation of research materials. The findings showed that while some marital practices of Muslims in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State can be adjudged Islamic, a lot of others are at variance with the orthodox teachings of Islam. The study also revealed that Muslims in Kaiama, in their marital practices, are being influenced by their cultural practices, majority of which are repugnant to Islamic ideals. The research therefore concluded that for Muslims in Kaiama to be wholly Islamic in their marital practices, they need to break away from the influence of their traditional culture.
