SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
"Karo kari", better known as an honor killing, is an important human rights issue. Women are killed by family members, or other members of the community, if it is believed that they bring "shame" to the family by looking at a man, objecting to an arranged marriage, dating, or going against family wishes. Honour killings are not limited to women but include men and members of the LGBT community. Honour killings occur worldwide, including the United States. Honour killings occur in predominately Islamic cultures, However it occurs outside of Islamic culture and in other religious faiths. The most egregious of honour killings occur in Pakistan. Despite Pakistan's commitment to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), honour killings continue to occur. This thesis brings awareness to the international community that honour killings remain a significant issue within Pakistan. Currently, CEDAW fails to protect the women of Pakistan. My thesis will specifically address the honour killing issue within Pakistan by providing an Islamic based solution.
