SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
This is a contextual and textual study of Islamic dialectical reasoning (jadal) as formulated by Abū al-Ma'ālī al-Juwaynī (d. 478/1085), better known as Imām al-Haramayn al-Juwaynī, who was the leading jurist and theologian living in Nīshāpūr. The present study addresses two central questions: "why does Imām al-Haramayn develop jadal theory and apply it in his scholarly works?" and "how does jadal play a role in the integration between kalām (Islamic theology) and fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) that leads to the formation of Sunnī orthodoxy in the fifth/eleventh century?"
