SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
This thesis considers critically the Takiyeh Dowlat, a monumental theater house with a short life of only 68 years, as a means of analyzing one approach toward modernity in Iran. Begun in 1873, it was demolished in 1946 and replaced by a national bank. In this thesis, I aim to explore some of the consequences of giving such high-level institutional support to a theater that, in time, led to the modernization of Iranian theater and society.
