SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
Dance has been thought to be prohibited in Islam, so dance has been illegal in the Islamic Republic of Iran since the revolution in 1979. I became interested in researching Islam itself and finding out why human beings' rhythmic movement in Islam is illegal while most of the religious practices in Islam can easily be perceived as dance, such as prayer. Dance has historically been taboo in Iran, even before Islam became a religion for most of the Iranians. The word dance itself signifies sexuality in Iran; however in this paper I define dance as rhythmic movement in time and space. The Qur'an encourages its followers to move rhythmically as they pray. There is evidence in the Qur'an and the sayings of the prophets that illustrate the importance of moving bodies in prayer. The religious authorities tried to ignore the importance of the moving bodies in prayer, but still there is evidence that shows in Qur'an how important it is for Muslims to pray with their bodies moving in time and space.
