SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
The concept of mobile DNA is rooted in Barbara McClintock's discovery of transposable controlling elements in maize in the 1940s. In recent years, the molecular analysis in bacteria, animals and plants provided insights in the variety of mechanisms by which these elements transpose, identifying them as causal agents for chromosomal rearrangements and DNA sequence variation, providing a great part of the flexibility required for evolution. This book provides insights into the current state of transposon research spanning from bacterial to animals and plants. The regulation of transposition and its biological consequences and how transposable elements can be exploited as potent experimental tools are described.
