SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT
Text of Note
The TRANSMED Atlas, consisting of a CD-ROM and a book, provides an updated overview of the geological and geophysical characteristics of the Mediterranean region by integrating new and pre-existing data on surface geology, seismic profiles and mantle tomography, both on land and at sea. Sixty-two structural geologists, geophysicists, marine geologists, petrologists, sedimentologists, stratigraphers, paleo-geographers and petroleum geologists coming from eighteen countries and working for the petroleum industry, academia and other institutions, both public and private, have contributed to this publication. The CD-ROM includes sixteen lithospheric transects across the Mediterranean region and the surrounding areas. Each transect is accompanied by an explanatory text with figures as well as by a series of clickable insets (seismic lines, well logs, litho-chrono-stratigraphic charts, paleo-geographic reconstructions, detailed maps, etc.) providing data in support of the interpretation shown in the transects. An extensive bibliography is included. The TRANSMED Atlas is geared towards all earth scientists working in the Mediterranean domain, particularly those willing to put the results of their own research within a wider framework, as well as those unfamiliar with the Mediterranean and finally at university teachers looking for a source of synthetic information for a course in Mediterranean regional geology.
