SUMMARY OR ABSTRACT

Text of Note
Ceramics used in biomedical applications range in porosity from two to fifty nanometers, and are most often used to deliver drugs, but can also serve as starting material for the fabrication of scaffolds for tissue engineering. Vellet-Regí, Colilla (both inorganic and bioinorganc chemistry, U. Complutense de Madrid, Spain), and Manzano (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) discuss the materials and their applications. Their topics are biocompatible and bioactive mesoporous ceramics, mesoporous ceramics as drug delivery systems, stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems based on mesoporous silica, mesoporous silica nanoparticles in nanomedicine, and bone tissue regeneration.
