Today's organizations are going through an overwhelming change and great uncertainty. With the revolution of technology and the increase in virtual work environments, the urgent need exists for virtual organizations' leaders to innovate and provide necessary skills for virtual teams. The challenge for organizational leaders is to facilitate the innovation in leadership development for virtual teams whose members are geographically dispersed and whose communication is through the Internet with minimal face-to-face interaction. This qualitative study was designed to explore the innovations in leadership development for virtual teams. Presently, unique challenges abound for virtual teams' leaders. Based on the interviews, the findings revealed the need for skills, attributes, and behaviors that establish trust through the use of technology, communication, sharing information and knowledge, bridging cultural differences, overcoming isolation, and monitoring teams' progress. A number of innovations in leadership development for virtual teams were identified, to address the lack of knowledge of virtual teams' leaders to lead virtual teams. The participants indicated that leading virtual teams is a relatively new discipline that needs to be recognized and learned. In today's world, where technology has become a dominant force in life and the demand for globalization is more important than ever, developing leaders for effective virtual teams that respond to the dynamic working environment is not an option, it is a must.
