The Bannānī family of Morocco were originally converts to Islam from Judaism, who belonged to a social category known as bildiyyīn ("people of the town"). Originally from Fez, the family eventually established itself in other major cities of northern Morocco, including Rabat, Salé, Meknès, and more recently Casablanca, and achieved fame for the many scholars, jurisconsults, and men of letters among its members. Jews from Fez converted to Islam at various times throughout the premodern period, but in the mid-ninth/fifteenth century a mass conversion took place. The conversion
