Introduction: Social skills defined as a set of skills that people use to interact and communicate with each other. There are various factors, including attachment styles and emotion regulation that influence on the social skills of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The purpose of present study was to determine the mediating role of emotion regulation in the relationships between attachment styles and social skills in children with ASD. Method: This was a correlational study with a descriptive-analytical design. 120 children (96 boys, 24 girls) were selected from 6-8 year-old statistical population who were studying in the special school for autism in the school year 2020-2021 at Tehran City. The sample method was multiphase cluster sampling (according to educational district, school, and class). All children who were dignosed high functioning autism according to the psychiatric interview and getting 19 points and higher in parent form of the Autism Spectrum Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ, Ehlers, Gilberg, Wing, 1999). Their intelligence quotient was assessed by the Raven Progressive Matrices (RPM; Raven, 1947). Among the children, 102 individuals (78 boys, 24 girls) who received more than 85 points in RPM, were assessed by the Autism Social Skills Profile (ASSP; Bellini, 2006), the Middle Childhood Attachment (MCA; Ronaghi et al., 2013), Emotion Regulation Checklist (ERC; Shields and Chicketti, 1995). The collected data were analyzed by using Spearman correlation coefficient and path analysis. Results: The findings showed that there is a negative and significant correlation between attachment styles with social skills. In addition, attachment styles and emotion regulation were positively correlated (p<0.001). The results of path analysis showed that emotion regulation had a direct effect (effect size=0.89) on social skills. In addition, the attachment styles had an indirect effect (effect size= -3.09) on the social skills when the emotion regulaton was considered as a mediating variable. Although, the attachment styles had no direct effect (effect size=-0.16) on social skills. Conclusion: The results of present study are helpful for parent’s awareness about the role of attachment styles and emotion regulation so that they will be sensitive when forming the attachment relations with their offsprings. The results will also show the way for professionals to design interventions that focus on modifying attachment styles, improving the parent-child relationship, and regulation emotion. Thus, it can be expected that the social skills of children with ASD will be improved by modifying insecure attachment styles and emotion regulation. Therefore, it is concluded that secure attachment style and emotion regulation can prevent the negative consequences of social skills deficits on the daily and academic activities of children with ASD.
