Objective: This study aims to investigate the role of early maladaptive schemas in explanation of depression symptoms.Method: The present research is a post-hoc (casual-comparative) crosssectional study that was carried out on a sample of 113 subjects including 58 patients with major depression disorder who had experienced at least one relapse and 58 non-clinical individuals without depression history who were selected using convenience sampling. The subjects were assessed usingYoung maladaptive schema questionnaire and the Beck depression inventory(BDI-II). In spite of descriptive statistical methods, independent T-test, stepwise regression, and Pearson correlation were applied to analyze data in this research.Results: The study demonstrated significant differences among clinical and non-clinical groups in all schemas. Based on predictive regression models, it is indicated that social isolation, subjugation, and defeat were the most active schemas in patient with major depression disorder. However, social isolation made a significant contribution to the prediction of major depression.Moreover, social isolation was specified as the most active schema invegetative/ physical and pessimism/ worthlessness/suspicion symptoms. This is while, dependence/ incompetence was determined as the most important schema in cognitive/ psychological symptom.Conclusion: The results of this study indicate significant differences among clinical group and non-clinical samples in all early maladaptive schemas.Furthermore, the most active schema in the patients with major depression disorder and its symptoms were obtained. In accordance with the obtained active early maladaptive schemas, this research can also be applied in clinical and counseling environments to help patients with major depression disorder.Keywords: Early maladaptive schemas, major depression disorder depression symptoms.
