ROMS which means that students should solely rely on their teacher for pronunciation practices. The findings of this study might be useful for material developers and textbook designers. The finding can be used to create a textbook that truly leads to students second language development.-This study tried to find out the similarities and differences between English textbooks that are prescribed by the Ministry of Education to be used by Iranian teachers at Iranian high schools and Interchange series that are mostly used in EFL institutions. A total number of forty teachers, 25 to 40 years old, from governmental schools and private EFL institutes (20 from each) participated in this study. The participants were asked to rate the chosen materials, English Book 1 and Interchange 1, according to the criteria of the questionnaire. Also five of them holding an M.A. in TEFL were interviewed to explore the detailed explanations and justifications for their responses. It was concluded that Interchange 1 is superior to English Book 1 in terms of its effectiveness in leading to L2 learning. There should be changes to the English Book 1 in style, font, and pictures. The book is recommended to be in color not just simply black and white. Objective should be clearly stated and the progress should be checked periodically. The book completely lacks any supplementary materials. There are not any cassettes or CD-ROMS which means that students should solely rely on their teacher for pronunciation practices.
