based and does hardly satisfy Iranian students needs in the real world, moreover it is not compatible with the trends of communicative language teaching. It is argued that the writers of this book had better modify it by employing more communicative tasks to satisfy Iranian students needs and wants -Textbooks play a pivotal role in language classrooms and educational systems all over the world. They are important because they can encourage or discourage learners depending on their materials. For instance, we have seen so far that how enthusiastic learners are at the beginning of their courses to see their textbooks. Advocates of the course book discuss that it is one of the simplest forms of materials which gives learners a sense of harmony, unity and advancement. It is useful for teachers to make themselves ready beforehand and for the learners to look over again in order to correct or improve themselves. The present study compares two English textbooks, Interchange1Third edition (Richards, 2005) and English Book1of Iranian highs schools (Birjandy et al., 2011). A qualitative approach was adopted to collect and analyze the data. Data collection was exploratory involving qualitative data which were analyzed interpretively. The comparison illustrates the probable similarities and differences in terms of: content, vocabulary, grammar, reading exercises and activities, pronunciation practice, physical makeup and language functions. Although each one of these books has its own merits and demerits, overall the findings reveals that English book 1, in comparison with Interchange 1, is more grammar.
