based learning of vocabulary more effective than the other two levels, though the intermediate and elementary level learners also perceived this type of learning to be very effective and impressive. The results of this study can be useful to textbook designers. The results can also give language teachers some insights about what their students perceive to be more effective in the vocabulary development-Failing to remember previously encountered words, expanding the vocabulary knowledge and discovering unknown words are the commonly reported complaints of both EFL and ESL learners. This problem requires the utilization of some strategies to face with it. This study attempted to shed light on the improvement of vocabulary knowledge of Iranian EFL learners through collecting information on their perceptions. To this end, the present study employed a mixed method design study. A questionnaire consisting of six tasks and 20 questions was distributed among 120 elementary, intermediate, and advanced EFL learners (40 learners from each level) in a private EFL institute. Then the researcher set an interview with three learners from each level. Finally, the data of the questionnaires and interviews were analyzed to obtain a result for EFL learners' perceptions. The findings revealed that the advanced EFL learners perceive etymology.
