The energy loss issue is one of the most important problems in electrical systems, and it is necessary to reduce it as much as possible. Attention to the loss issue in the industrial countries began since widespread electrical power use in 1900's. On the distribution networks, the losses resulted from the reactive current can be reduced with reactive power compensation, which could be formulated as a subset of Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problem. There are various methods to reactive power compensation on distribution systems, and the proper method is selected based on the network type and the power supply conditions. The compensation with shunt capacitor is one of the usual and pervasive methods on the radial distribution systems. Determining the optimal sizes and locations of the capacitors is called the Optimal Capacitor Placement Problem (OCPP). The installed capacitor banks on the power systems, in addition to voltage profile improvement, causes power factor correction, loss reduction, reactive power control, system capacity increase, and billing charge reduction. To solve the OCPP we investigate using some new intelligent optimization methods, also we propose some modified algorithms. The OCPP is a multi-objective and multi-modal constraint optimization problem. Because of having a complicated and non-differential objective function, the OCPP is a combinatorial problem, whose mathematical model is a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem and thus conventional analytic and gradient based methods have difficulty to handle it. Recently several intelligent methods have been successfully applied on similar problems; therefore we will utilize these intelligent methods and try to solve the OCPP. Also we propose novel plans to modify the intelligent algorithms and before applying them on the OCPP, evaluate the efficiency of them on the standard optimization benchmarks. The obtained simulation results demonstrate that our proposed methods have desirable results for optimal capacitor placement problem and improve the quality of power supply; furthermore energy loss reduction leads to appreciable economical benefits to the power companies. The minimum and maximum final cost reductions obtained by our proposed algorithms are 6.5 and 14.63 , which are observed on the 9-bus IEEE and the 15-bus radial distribution system, respectively. Comparison with the results obtained by other methods demonstrates that the proposed algorithms and particularly the PSO and the SFL algorithms have a better performance than other proposed methods and cause 0.67 and 3.16 in the final cost reduction with respect to the previously published results
