In order to study the effect of limited irrigation at different growth stages on the yield and quality of onion (Allium cepa L.) (Azar Shahr cv.) an experiment was carried out in Khalat Poushan (Agriculture Research Station, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Tabriz in 2008). Then, 50 days old seedlings were transplanted to pot, with 8kg. Treatments were consisting of 0.6, 0.75, 0.8 and 1 soil moisture at different growth stagesof onion. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized block design with 8 irrigation treatments and four replications. The result showed that vegetative characteristics including plant height, leaf number, bulb ratio, bulb fresh and dry weight were significantly affected limited irrigation treatment leaf number, height plant, bulb yield and dry weight were increased by increasing irrigation water amount. The highest bulb ratio was obtained at treatments that had received medium irrigation water. The P and K concentration were higher in medium irrigation, and treatment that received much water had the low P concentration. Pyruvic acid was increased with optimum application of irrigation water, and it was decreased in coppletly irrigated plants. The total soluble solid of onion bulbs were increased with decreasing in irrigation water. The number of scale and dry matter were increased with decreasing of irrigation water, but ash weight was increased with optimum application Of irrigation water. Also were increased bulb height, bulb diameter and bulb neck diameter increased with increasing amount of irrigation water. By increasing the amount of irrigation water of chlorophyll, RWC, WU and ET was increased.Water use efficiency also was increased with increasing the amount of irrigation water, but was not significant, differences between the medium and full irrigation. Crop yield response factor in treatments that had received the lowest amount of water in the yield formation period was higher the treatment. The findings indicated that onion plants were very sensitive to Lack of soil water during the yield formation period, but it less sensitivity in the vegetative and ripening periods
