Entering the process of fundamental social change following the acceptance of Islam as religion, Turkish society reflected the effects of this change to all aspects of social life. This Islamic effect, being reflected into the Turkish literature in the course of time, laid the ground for a new type of literature to come into existence, and along with this process gazavatname came into the scene as a new type. Gazavatname type of literary works have an important place among the Turkish war literature products with Islamic quality. Besides their including a lot of information belonging to different disciplines, these types of works, each of which is a cultural treasure with their literary importance, fill an important gap in our cultural history. To be considered within this frame, one of the important gazavatname examples of our literature is Secaatname of Asafi's. Secaatname, treating of Ottoman eastern campaigns between 1578-1585 during the period of Sultan Murad HI, and composed of 6982 couplets, is a work penned using masnawi verse form. Dealing with Secaatname, not having been evaluated from a literary point of view yet until today, in this context will definitely contribute to the studies on old Turkish literature. Considering this, with this work that we took under investigation, it was aimed to evaluate the life and literary figure of its author, examine the work from a literary point of view, and reveal its text in all its originality under the light of two handwritten copies now available. In the wake of our examinations; Secaatname was penned by a poet who was cognizant of poetry and science and had lived personally the events that he treated of. Asafi, in accordance with the literary identity he exhibited in his work, makes a point with his simple and fluent language, mastery over prosody, skill at using discourse arts and harmony possibilities of Turkish language, and dominating style.
