African American women's contributions to the workplace and society as a whole have been overlooked for far too long. As Black women continue to earn college degrees in record numbers, it is important to address the challenges that may impede their success as they aspire to climb the ranks. This qualitative study explored the experiences of African American women leaders serving in Illinois community colleges to learn more about the unique hardships they continue to endure due to the reality of race and gender through the use of narrative inquiry, a storytelling approach for sharing their personal stories of fortitude and perseverance.
