The state of our current educational system is fraught with disparities. Minority students yield consistently lower performance than White students, and although there has been some improvement, the disparities continue. The lack of being able to close the academic gap between students of color and their White counterparts raises several questions. How is it that the richest democracy in the world yields such poor educational outcomes for its minorities? This extended literature review intends to shed light on this crucial topic and the need to bring awareness to teachers and educators as to how they can begin to address this gap. In order to uncover the layers that birthed and influence our current educational system, we must start at the beginning. We must take a painful look at our segregated and racial educational history in order to understand how this past is reflected in our education system. Among the implications is for these historical considerations to be included as a course in teachers' preparation programs.
