The pharmacokinetics of phenobarbital (PHB, 10 mg/kg), carbamazepine (CBZ, 7.5 mg/kg), and antipyrine (AP, 50 mg/kg) were studied in mature domestic turkeys, roosters, and ducks following a single IV administration. In addition, the bioavailability of PHB (11 mg/kg) was determined in turkeys as well as the pharmacokinetics of phenytoin (PHT) in male and female turkeys following single IV doses (5 and 15 mg/kg). The PHB clearance (Clt) for the rooster was similar to the Clt in the duck, but less than that observed for the turkey. Carbamazepine t1/2usd\betausd in the duck was significantly different from that observed in the rooster and turkey. The Clt of CBZ was significantly different for the duck as compared to the turkey and rooster. The Vmax of AP in the turkey was far greater than that observed for both duck and rooster. The t1/2usd\betausd and Clt were correspondingly different in turkeys when compared to duck and rooster. The Vd in male turkeys was 0.84 0.08 l/kg and 0.73 0.10 l/kg in females. The PHT Clt for female turkeys was two-fold greater than that observed for the males. The PHT t1/2usd\betausd for male and female turkeys were 1.85 0.54 and 2.20 1.01 hours, respectively. Percents bound propranolol at the low concentration in turkey, rooster, and duck were 90.0 4.37, 93.2 1.60, and 78.9 2.00%, respectively and for the high concentration were 89.5 3.80, 83.8 1.62, and 78.2 3.61%, respectively. Percents bound of phenytoin in the turkey, rooster, and duck with a low PHT concentration were 63.6 3.85, 64.6 4.61, and 60.5 8.36%, respectively and for the high concentration were 48.2 12.2, 40.0 12.8, and 50.3 + 8.95%, respectively. The percents bound warfarin in turkey, rooster, and duck plasma at the low concentration were 79.5 1.95, 89.0 1.80, and 73.4 3.17%, respectively and for the high concentration were 77.4 2.46, 80.0 2.96, and 66.6 6.91%, respectively.
