Asma Barlas and Amina Wadud engage in feminist reinterpretations of the Qur'an in search of gender equality for modern Muslims. Their work builds on the scholarship of others who have studied gender in Islam such as Nazira Zeineddine, Fatima Mernissi, and Leila Ahmed. The liberation that Barlas and Wadud advocate differs in important ways from that of "otincha" Muslim women leaders in modern-day Uzbekistan, who often promote a return to gendered hierarchy and traditional gender roles.
