Although existing literature has pointed to a relationship between religion and suicide, it has remained unclear how suicidality is linked to various religions and how this relation might be moderated. Further, most of literature on religion and suicide has focused heavily on Christianity, leaving a dearth of research on other religions and suicidal behaviors. Therefore, the purpose of the current review was to examine the relationship between suicidal behaviors and three different religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. Further, this review included an analysis of literature on positive coping mechanisms within the three religions for protecting against suicide. Studies have shown that religion can reduce the risk of suicide attempts by a significant percentage. With this in mind, theological, sociological, and psychological aspects of religion were discussed in relation to suicide. In addition, the prevalence of suicidal behaviors among the three religious groups was examined. Empirical studies, non-empirical studies, psychology textbooks, and theological literature were included in this review. Results indicated both protective and risk factors of religions on suicidal behaviors. A discussion of findings and potential future research direction was also presented.
