ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Khālid b. al-Walīd al-Makhzūmī (d. 46/666), son of the famous Muslim general Khālid b. al-Walīd, followed in his father's footsteps, reportedly fighting alongside his father in the battle of al-Yarmūk (15/636) in present-day Jordan. During the reign of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān was appointed by Muʿāwiya b. Abī Sufyān (d. 60/680) as governor of Ḥimṣ in Syria. Following ʿUthmān's (r. 23-35/644-56) assassination, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān joined Muʿāwiya in his dispute with
