ʿAbd al-Qadir b. ʿUthman Gidado (ʿAbd al-Qādir b. ʿUthmān Gidado, 1809-59) was born, probably in Birnin Sokoto (Sokoto city), the first son of his scholarly mother, Asmaʾ bt. Shaykh ʿUthman b. Fudi (Asmāʾ bt. Shaykh ʿUthmān b. Fūdī). His father Gidado was a close associate of Muhammad Bello (Muḥammad Bello, Caliph in Sokoto, 1804-17), a key commander in the jihād of 1804-8 led jointly by Bello's father Shaikh ʿUthman b. Fudi (Shaykh ʿUthmān b. Fūdī, r. 1803-15) and his uncle, the wazīr ʿAbdullah
