Muḥammad Qulī Quṭb Shāh , sultan of Golconda (r. 988-1020/1580-1612), is traditionally considered the first sāḥib-i dīvān (author of a full collection of poems) in Urdu and Dakhinī literature. The third son of Ibrāhīm Qulī Quṭb Shāh (r. 957-88/1550-80), Muḥammad Qulī acceded to the throne at the age of fifteen, under the protection of the powerful Hindu minister Rāy Rāo, thus becoming the fifth sovereign of the Quṭb Shāhī dynasty, which ruled Golconda from 901/1496 to 1098/1687.
