Malaysia is a religiously and ethnically diverse Muslim-majority country in Southeast Asia, separated by the sea into West (Peninsular) Malaysia and East Malaysia on the island of Borneo. Malaysia is a federation of thirteen states (negeri) and the Federal Territories (Wilayah Persekutuan), the latter comprising the capital Kuala Lumpur, the administrative capital Putrajaya, and the island of Labuan. Islam is the constitutional "religion of the federation" (Constitution, Article 3[1]). The Muslim religious bureaucracy is required to follow the Shāfiʿī legal school of Islam. Religions other than Islam can
