The Mahkamah Syariʿah was established as a redefinition and expansion of Islamic religious courts in Aceh after the fall of Indonesian President Suharto in 1998 and the subsequent Reformasi decentralisation reforms. These reforms granted Aceh a type of local autonomy that in principle conferred on the province broader powers of self-governance.
