Abū ʿĀmir Yūsuf b. Aḥmad b. Sulaymān Ibn Hūd al-Muʾtaman (d. 478/1085) was one of the most important representatives of the Arab mathematical tradition of al-Andalus. His only surviving text is the first volume of an unfinished work, the Kitāb al-istikmāl ("Book of perfection"). Al-Muʾtaman was born in Zaragoza just before the middle of the fifth/eleventh century, to the royal family of the Banū Hūd. He died in 478/1085, after a short reign beginning in 474/1081. As an amīr , he had a
