Muḥammad Kāmil Ḥusayn (1901-77) was an Egyptian surgeon, novelist, and writer. He was born in Subk al-Daḥḥāk, a village in the Delta governorate of al-Munūfiyya, to a learned family with peasant roots. After the death of his father-a teacher of Arabic language and friend of the prominent reformer Muḥammad ʿAbduh (d. 1905)-Ḥusayn's elder brother took care of him and provided him with a secular education in Cairo. He graduated from medical school in 1923, then went on a government sponsored study mission to London
