Hasbi Ash Shiddieqy (10 March 1904-9 December 1975) was born at Lhokseumawe into a family of Acehnese ʿulamāʾ . As a young man he pursued further studies at the modern reformist al-Irsyad school in Surabaya (East Java) where he became increasingly involved in Islamic reformist organisations and regularly wrote columns and articles for numerous periodicals. His most significant publications, however, were related to his later involvement with the Indonesian State Islamic Studies Institutes (Institut Agama Islam Negeri, IAIN), which began with his appointment as lecturer in Yogyakarta in 1951
