Hūshang Gulshīrī (1938-2000) was born to a working-class family in Isfahan. Having received a degree in Persian literature, he taught in schools in Isfahan and its surroundings. He began to publish in journals in the late 1950s. Intellectual friendship with the poet and noted modernist fiction writer Bahrām Ṣādiqī (1936-86) and the circle of writers publishing in the literary journal Jung-i Iṣfahān ("Isfahan Anthology") was essential to his personal and intellectual growth.
