Gulbargā , a city in the southern Indian state of Karnataka (17.34° N latitude and 76.83° E longitude), is a major architectural and cultural centre of the Deccan region. Founded before the Delhi sultanate conquered the area in the early eighth/fourteenth century, Gulbargā rose to prominence in about 750/1349, when, under the name of Aḥsanābād, it became the capital of the Bahmanī sultanate (748-934/1347-1528).
